Friday TopFiveDay! #60

Our favorites of week 7

The awesome 5

Every week we share a top 5 of the most interesting, coolest, funniest and most exciting stuff that we have encountered on the web and elsewhere. In our studio we have been sharing things that we see around us and that we find remarkable, for as long as we’ve been a team. This way we keep each other informed of the world outside of our personal perspective, because we have a collective hunger for the new.

With this overview we give you some insight into what fascinates us. In addition to projects from clients and self-initiated projects, this is what Jort, Vivian, Jord, and John Patrick are talking about in the studio. Do share this list and let us know if you have any tips!

Dynamic Portraitism

Salman Khoshroo makes insanely diverse portrait paintings. Browsing through his Instagram makes you wonder multiple things: “How did he make this?”, “Is this all done by hand?”, “Have these all been made by one artist?”, “Are these actual paintings and sculptures?”. He crosses from the extreme figurative to cyber-art to kitsch to craftsmanship to abstract, almost always creating portraits that feel newly invented. Be sure to also check the little movies with making of footage on his insta. Holy shit!

I’m re-lovin’ it

Package design is one of the fields we work in with loads of pleasure and it’s always super inspiring to see others pull off amazing work. Pearl Fisher redesigned the packaging for McDonald’s and they pulled it off majestically with big graphics and an extremely tasteful color palette.

Pentawards 2020

More packaging design news from the Pentawards who picked the design winners for 2020. The Air Vodka winner is a bit underwhelming (…) but the Platinum Award for dutch department store HEMA by Richard Mooij kicks ass and is rightly awarded.

Unreal faces

When you look at where CGI has gotten in the last decade is stunning: MetaHumans… And now you can make these insanely realistic computer characters on your home PC or Mac with the Epic Games Unreal Engine… Download, install, create. Both fascinating and eerie. Designboom has a nice feature on it.

Gallery Friedman Brenda is making an excellent series of talks on design called Design in Dialogue. Check out their talks with Irma Boom, Joris Laarman, Christien Meindertsma and Iwan Baan.
